Tips to help minimise the extent of fire and soot damage:

  • Avoid touching soot affected surfaces. Soot fall out is generally easy to remove from most surfaces however sooty finger prints and hand prints are more difficult to remove as natural body oils cause the soot to stick.
  • Turn all electrical items off and leave them for our qualified staff to inspect and test. Electricity is dangerous and soot is a conductor of electricity which can lead to more damage, a second fire or even loss of life.
  • Loss of electricity can mean that fridges are no longer operating. Remove all food items from fridges and freezers as rotten food can cause severe odour and contamination problems.
  • Heavy soot fall out is more difficult to clean. We would recommend that heavily soot soiled building, furniture or contents items be left for professional cleaning.
  • In the case of heavy soot soiling a customer’s time is best spent removing personal items, documents, sentimental items and personal valuables as generally only the customer is aware of the value attributed to these items.
